The more than 350 Shelby County High School graduates had a lot to celebrate as they received their diplomas Friday night. But the evening also took on a somber tone as they honored a classmate who died tragically in a car crash earlier this week.
18-year-old Samantha Mathus-Cooper was killed Tuesday when the car she was riding in spun out of control and crashed into a fence along a rural road. Three other young people in the car were injured in the crash.
Mathus-Cooper's classmates wore white ribbons bearing her initials in her honor during the graduation ceremony at the Frankfort Civic Center. There was also a moment of silence to observe the loss. A table bearing her picture and dozens of flowers was placed by the stage.
Mathus-Cooper recently married and was reported to have been very excited about her life beyond high school.

Glad to see that they honor someone. I had a cousin that passed that would have gotten hers and they didn't even mention her name. Happy that theres some out that that has a heart. Just want to say sorry for the loss to the family.

Bless this girls family and her new husband. A loss like this is at the least unbearable. Six years later, I still miss my mom dearly but I know she watches over me and she's in a much more sane and relaxing place. I can't say that I understand losing a love that way though. My thoughts and prayers are with Miss Mathus-Cooper's family.

I don't usually comment on here...however. My sons are 23 and 16. I cannot bear to even try to imagine what her parents, what too many parents have gone thru. It seems we have lost at least one teen a week to our roads in the recent months. My oldest son has lost 3 friends on us 34/27. Isn't it time to take the idea seriously of raising the age to 18. or, how about we make drivers ed as important as the core classes we teach our kids. Other states, Michigan comes to mind, have very strict programs before a teen can drive alone. They are not cheap, and that is probobly why we don't have them here. In my opinion, no amount of money is too high to stop this epidemic. Please slow down.. all of you. Nothing is so important as to lose your life over. Think of your parents, we can't bear to lose you...Take care.
