Kentucky's swine flu tally reaches 98

LEXINGTON, KY -- Kentucky's swine flu total reached 98 confirmed cases Friday, and the count is likely to top 100 sometime next week, state health officials said, reports the Lexington Herald-Leader in its Saturday edition.

But Dr. Kraig Humbaugh, the state epidemiologist, said the number almost certainly does not reflect the true Kentucky total, since health officials aren't testing every person suspected of having the H1N1 virus.

He also pointed out that many of those with confirmed flu already have recovered and resumed normal activites. Only five Kentucky patients have been hospitalized since the outbreak began.

"But this event is not over," Humbaugh said. "We don't know if the virus will mutate; become more severe; or keep the same severity we're seeing now."

Flu totals in nearby states range all over the map. Ohio had only 35 confirmed cases Friday, while Indiana reported 173 and Tennessee 108. West Virginia had just 10 cases.

Federal health officials say swine flu activity is generally declining nationwide, reports the Lexington Herald-Leader.
