WASHINGTON (AP) - The top Senate Republican is accusing Democrats of moving too hastily on Sonia Sotomayor's Supreme Court
Senate Minority Leader McConnell criticized Democrats Wednesday for scheduling mid-July hearings for the federal appeals judge. The Kentucky Republican charged that majority Democrats are trying to set the fastest schedule in recent memory for a high court nominee with the longest record in recent memory.
McConnell did not say what the GOP is prepared to do, if anything, to slow down the timetable. GOP senators say Sotomayor left key documents out of her response to a questionnaire on her background, writings and rulings. They say that's more evidence that more time is needed.
Vermont Democrat Patrick Leahy, the Judiciary Committee chairman, announced Tuesday that hearings would open July 13.
