MAMMOTH CAVE, Ky. (AP) - Mammoth Cave National Park is offering
two free tours on three weekends over the summer.
The move is part of an initiative to stimulate summer vacations at national parks by waiving entrance fees on the weekends of June 20-21, July 18-19 and August 15-16.
Since Mammoth Cave doesn't charge an entrance fee, park Superintendent Patrick Reed says he is embracing the spirit by offering free self-guided Mammoth Cave Discovery Tours and guided Mammoth Passage Tours on those dates.
Both tours enter the cave at the Historic Entrance and include some of the mammoth passages for which the cave was named. The guided Mammoth Passage tour is almost a mile long and lasts for about an hour.
The self-guided tour takes approximately the same route and ranger guides are stationed along the route to answer questions.
