An Eastern Kentucky jailer is found guilty of rape.

Elliott County jailer Charles F. Howard was found guilty of first-degree rape on Monday.

A jury deliberated for nearly four hours before convicting the 51-year-old from Sandy Hook.

Investigators said the rape happened while Howard was transporting a 28-year-old housewife from Sandy Hook to the Boyd County Detention Center last year.

He will spend 12 years in jail, his sentencing is set for July 10th.

My dad was jailer of a rural county for 21 years. The first year he was elected as jailer, the jail was shut down. He had to transport all prisoners to other jails. Men usually went to Rowan County and women went to Montgomery County. When he had to transport women, either my mother, female deputy jailer or I went with him. He not only had another person in the car with him, he had another female in the car with him because a female prisoner can still make allegations against two men, but unlikely to make allegations if another female is around.
