Governor's Mansion goes 'green' with new vegetable garden

First Lady Jane Beshear and local volunteers have transformed three plots of land into a vegetable garden on the grounds of Berry Hill Mansion.

Each plot measures 16-by-24 feet and will harvest crops such as corn, cucumbers, watermelon and cantaloupes. Kentucky State University students and garden club members, Kentucky Proud, and Access Food Pantry have been involved in the "green" push.

First Lady Jane Beshear says, "This is an example of reducing the carbon foot-print while also providing an opportunity for young people."

The Governor's Garden is just one part of the Green Team initiative, which strives to promote sustainability, energy efficiency and environmental preservation.

The majority of the produce from the garden will be donated to Access Soup Kitchen.
