Many people will be away from home the next few days. But police say just because you're not there, doesn't mean someone won't try to come down your chimney, bust though a window, or kick in a door.

Christmas is a prime time for burglars.
Police say homes sitting empty are exactly what burglars are looking for, but there are some simple things you can do to keep your house safe.

Make sure all your doors & windows are locked.
You can also put several sets of interior lights on timers to give the illusion that someone is home.
Don't leave presents in full view by windows.

Police also say you should get a trusted neighbor to check on your house daily and have them gather your mail & newspapers daily.
