Two off-duty Danville police officers who were on their way home with their families following the city's fireworks show found themselves helping to arrest a drunk driver.
Sgt. Jonathan Courtwright was caravanning with one of his off-duty colleagues when they got stuck in heavy traffic on Ben Ali Drive. They spotted a vehicle being driven erratically coming towards them and made a call to dispatch with the vehicle's description. After seeing the car, it ended up getting involved in a wreck further up the road at the intersection of Ben Ali and Perryville. The driver then took off from the scene of the accident. The off-duty officers spotted him again. Thanks to the heavy traffic, they were actually able to get out of their own cars and approach the driver. He didn't believe the men were cops and they didn't have adequate resources to arrest him. He ended up taking off again and wrecked his car in a ditch.
The driver, 37-year-old Jeffrey Spielman, was arrested and is now being lodged in the Boyle County Detention Center. He is facing numerous charges including DUI and wanton endangerment. His bond has been set at $30,000.
