Thieves Stealing Car Parts For Platinum

Police in Southern Kentucky say no one seems to be immune from a rash of catalytic converter thefts.

Thieves are crawling under cars and sawing off the converters to sell the platinum that's inside. Often drivers will come out of a store and discover their converter is missing.

"As soon as you start your car up it sounds like you don't have muffler at all," said Deputy Michael Burton with the Adair County Sheriff's Office.

"They'll go into Wal-Mart, climb under your vehicle, saws off, 30 seconds and they're gone," said Billy Dorman with Holt's Auto Repair.

Replacing a stolen catalytic converter can cost you from a few hundred to about one thousand dollars.
