It's a multi-million dollar project that's not without controversy.

Construction officially began Thursday to rebuild Lexington's Lyric Theater.

It's been empty since the 1960's and rebuilding it will cost the city 6 million dollars, but city leaders say it's worth it.

They've been fighting for more than a decade for the right to rebuild the Lyric and even went to court in 2001 to take it from the group that owned it.

Now eight years later, the building that once played host to the likes of Duke Ellington and Ray Charles is getting a new life.

The project will take approximately one year to finish.
