Kentucky's unemployment rate up, near 26-year high

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky's unemployment rate has increased again and is near a 26-year high.

The state's seasonally adjusted preliminary unemployment rate in June reached 10.8 percent, up from 10.7 percent the month before.

The Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet released
the numbers on Thursday.

The U.S. jobless rate rose to 9.5 percent in June. Kentucky's jobless rate for June 2009 is 4.5 percentage points higher than in June 2008, according to a press release.

Dr. Justine Detzel, a state labor market analyst, says nearly every sector had job losses. Detzel says manufacturing jobs in Kentucky had the largest decline.

There were an estimated 226,122 unemployed Kentuckians in June, up about 4,800 people from the previous month.
