A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is out for for much of northern and eastern Kentucky until 9 p.m. This is just east of the Lexington metro.
A Whitley County mother and her boyfriend have been arrested after police and social workers discovered the woman's two children had been severely beaten.
The alleged abuse took place in the Briar Creek Trailer Park in Williamsburg. Police say David Bunch severely beat Raechelle Adkins' two young sons. Adkins tells NewsFirst that her three-year-old and five-year-old had gotten out of her trailer Wednesday morning while she slept. She said that she had "spanked" the children on the bottom and let them know that what they did was wrong. Later that night, she says Bunch sent her away to get dinner while he stayed with the boys. That's when she says the alleged abuse took place.
Adkins says she noticed bruises on her sons later that evening and immediately reacted.
"I went off," she said, "I didn't know what else to do. I made him leave and I got my kids and took them to a safe place."
Adkins said she returned to her trailer the next morning to find police and social workers there to arrest her and her boyfriend. Police say they came to the trailer at the request of social services.
Police say Bunch admitted to hitting the children but felt the punishment was appropriate for their behavior. He is facing two counts of first degree criminal abuse for his role in the alleged beating. Adkins is facing the same charges. Police say that she had a responsibility to report the abuse to authorities and didn't. Adkins says she didn't know that. She says she thought that if she took her kids out of the home and kicked out her boyfriend, she was doing the right thing.
Both Adkins and Bunch are being lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center on a $50,000 cash bond. Each of the charges they face is a class C felony punishable by up to ten years in prison.
