Updated: Mon 11:28 AM, Jan 08, 2007

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Authorities say a man fleeing a Louisville police officer crashed the vehicle he was driving into another car, killing an 11-year-old girl.

Louisville Metro Police Department Lieutenant Jim Sohan says a police officer was investigating a theft report around 10:40 p-m Eastern time Saturday night when a suspect fled from the officer.

Sohan says the officer stopped 20-year-old Donta Jones in downtown Louisville. Jones sped off and ran a red light a short distance away, where Jones' car hit another vehicle carrying one adult and seven children, Sohan said.

A deputy coroner said 11-year-old Demetra Boyd was pronounced dead shortly after 11 p-m last night of multiple injuries in the collision.

Sohan says the six other children were transported to a local hospital, where two were in serious condition.

Jones faces murder and other charges and was lodged with Louisville Metro Corrections.
