CUCUMBER, W.Va. (AP) - Two miners trapped in a southern West
Virginia mine Saturday have been found dead.

Emergency dispatchers say the miners became trapped in a pillar fall around 10:30 a-m at the Brooks Run mine in McDowell County.

The accident occurred up to a mile-and-a-half from the entrance of the mine. Ron Wooten, director of the state Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training, says rescuers are bringing their bodies to the surface.

Wooten expects to learn more once a team of investigators returns from underground.

The mine is owned by Alpha Natural Resources. In October, a miner was killed in a wall collapse at an Alpha mine in Preston County.

The miners are the first fatalities in West Virginia coal mines this year. Last year, 24 people died in West Virginia mines.
