A Floyd County grand jury on Tuesday indicted 54-year-old
corrections officer Charles Prater of Hueysville on a charge of
first-degree rape. The Courier-Journal reports the indictment
alleges Prater forcibly raped an inmate on June 13 at the
Wheelwright facility.
Since 2006, five other workers have been accused of misdemeanor
sexual abuse charges, but Prater's is the first to allege a felony.
Four of the defendants have been convicted, and the fifth is to go
to trial this month.
Nashville, Tenn.-based Corrections Corp. of America owns the
prison, where Kentucky has a contract to house up to 476 inmates.
Last month, Hawaii announced it was taking out the 168 inmates it
houses at the prison. Hawaii officials are conducting their own
investigation into sexual assault allegations.
