College Kids Complain of Costs
Rally For Students' RightsFor some college students, Wednesday was a snow day. Others just missed their classes. But all of them say they need help.
“I went from taking out a $2000 dollar loan to taking out a $5000 dollar loan,” says Morehead State University Student Christina Bolton.
It's Bolton's third annual Higher Education Rally. Each year she says she shells out more dough to pay her tuition.
“And it's gonna’ hurt us 10 or 15 years down the road,” says UK Student Todd Burus of the loan payments.
Burus is on scholarship, but he says he hears about the financial hurts of others every day.
It's a pain that Governor Fletcher says a $400 million surplus could provide some healing for. “I propose that we put $25 million additional in tuition assistance and I ask you support me in that effort,” he said Wednesday.
Lawmakers and state leaders say there's already some help such as Bucks for Brains, but they say they'll push for more this legislative session.
“And I think it's encouraging that they're starting programs for people younger than me,” says UK Student Blaine Thomas.
