Hundreds Gather To Mourn Ten Killed In Bardstown House Fire

BARDSTOWN, Ky. (AP) - Ten people killed in Kentucky's deadliest
structure fire in three decades were memorialized today in a ceremony punctuated by tears, hugs and applause.

About two thousand people packed the gymnasium for the afternoon
service at Bardstown High School. All the victims were members of a
well-known extended family.

Seven caskets lined the floor of the gym, since family members arranged for some of the victims to be buried together.

The Reverend Michael Smith of Bardstown's First Baptist Church told mourners he could offer them no answer as to why the victims died.

During the 90-minute service, several family members left in tears.

47-year-old Sherry Lynn Maddox had been renting the home. Two of her children, six grandchildren and Maddox's longtime boyfriend, 52-year-old Johnny Litsey died in the Tuesday fire.

The blaze was the state's deadliest building fire since the Beverly Hills Supper Club fire in northern Kentucky killed 165 people in 1977.
