FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A generations-old Kentucky law that bans the sale of liquor on Election Day would be lifted under legislation that's moving through the state legislature.
The law dates back to the days of prohibition when temperance leagues vilified alcohol in all forms. House Democrat Arnold Simpson of Covington says the law is antiquated and needs to be changed.
Simpson said liquor sales are a very important component of business and having a prohibition on any day for any period without a legitimate state interest is reprehensible.
The House Licensing and Occupations Committee unanimously approved Simpson's bill today and sent it to the full House for consideration. Simpson said the measure would allow bars and liquor stores to open at noon on Election Day. He expects it to spark debate as it moves through the legislative process.
