UNIONTOWN, Ky. (AP) - University of Kentucky basketball coach
John Calipari was on hand Friday for the ceremonial opening of a
new mine in Union County.
The Gleaner reports River View Coal's $270 million underground
mine is expected to employ 600 people by July 2010.
Calipari, who went underground to see the mine, told the crowd
his grandfather was a coal miner.
He may have also had another reason for attending. Joe Craft,
president and CEO of River View's parent company, is a UK graduate
who made a $6 million donation toward the school's basketball
practice facility three years ago.
Craft said the mine is the biggest investment the state has seen
since Gov. Steve Beshear took office.
Beshear, who was also on hand, said progress is being made to
reduce pollution from coal.
