Lieutenant Governor Continues Criticisms Of Governor

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Lieutenant Governor Steve Pence has told a newspaper that Governor Fletcher pardoned members of his staff in the midst of a patronage probe to try to keep the investigation from incriminating anyone in the governor's office.

Pence told the Lexington Herald-Leader he's quite confident that there was a fear about how high it would go up in the Fletcher administration. Pence's comments in today's edition of the newspaper came two days after Pence endorsed a rival to Fletcher's re-election bid.

On Monday, Pence endorsed former U-S Representative Anne Northup of Louisville, one of two challengers to Fletcher in the GOP primary. Pence was elected on Fletcher's ticket in 2003. He parted ways with the governor last year and declined to run on a re-election ticket.

Reacting to Pence's latest comments, Fletcher Chief of Staff Stan Cave said Pence has become the mouthpiece for the governor's chief opponents.
