Student charged with assault after stabbing in high school classroom

Chaos in a classroom after police say a fight ends with one student stabbed and another under arrest.

This all unfolded around noon Thursday at Madison Central High School in Richmond.

Police say two 17-year-old students got into a fight at the school's food lab. One of the students then stabbed the other.

Police have not identified the name of the victim. But 27 NEWSFIRST has identified him as Stevie Christopher Caldwell. He was rushed to UK Hospital, where he's said to be in fair condition.

"Obviously there was something going on," said 17 year-old Lakin Pugh, who says she was in the classroom at the time of the stabbing, "I looked over and they were fighting."

Pugh says the two boys have had disagreements in class before. Thursday the class was devided into groups, each with cooking assignments. Pugh says the boys were in the same group, and started arguing.

"Stevie falls to the floor, and blood starts going everywhere, and he realized he was in real pain and had been stabbed," Pugh said.

The other 17-year-old student was arrested. Richmond Police have now charged him with first degree assault. The student has not been identified.

Madison Central was placed under lock down after the stabbing. Students were later released to their parents at the school's normal dismissal time.

All activities at Madison Central Thursday evening have been canceled, including the school board meeting that was scheduled to take place at the school.

Classes were already canceled Friday due to fall break. The school system plans to have counselors at the school Monday when classes resume.
