Expanded homes near UK campus worry city leaders

Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry has been focusing a lot of attention lately on neighborhoods near the UK campus.

They're filled with older homes, many of which have been expanded and turned into apartments for UK students.

The mayor says those expansions have created major safety problems.

Now, the Urban County Council is taking up the issue.

Thursday night, the Council will hold a reading on a proposed six month ban, aimed at preventing large additions to homes, also known as vinyl boxes.

City leaders hope to use the time to find a more permanent solution.

The ban would prevent homeowners in the Third District from building any additions larger than 25 percent of the existing home.

Homeowners who do want to make additions can apply to the Council for a permit, as long as it's deemed a legitimate addition.
