Man beats grandmother over refusal to let him use her car

Police say a 68 year old Williamsburg woman was allowing her grandson and his wife to live with her.

“She was actually trying to take care of them, unfortunately she ended up being the victim,” said Williamsburg Police Officer Shawn Jackson.

William Kirkland is accused of attacking both his grandmother and his wife..because they didn’t want him driving his grandmother’s car.

A metal pipe was used…and police say both victims were beaten with it. Kirkland’s wife was taken to a local hospital, but 68 year old Julia Barton was airlifted to UK hospital with serious injuries..but was released today.

“Anyone that assaults their own grandmother, has to have some serious problems,” said Jackson.

Police after he beat up his grandmother, he took the car anyway, and then wrecked it not far from his grandmother’s home. Police say alcohol and speed were big factors.

Some neighbors witnessed the crash.

“I said to myself, there’s no way you’re going to make that curve, and sure enough a second after that, I heard a loud bang, and sure enough, he was laid up in the ditch on this side,” said a witness who did not want to be identified.

Police say they don’t know why Kirkland wanted the car so badly..or where he needed to get to. But his destinations ended up being a local hospital…and the local jail.
