A surface miner crushed by heavy equipment became the first miner killed in Kentucky in 2007, a state official said.
Charles I. Griffith, 48, of Pikeville, was operating an excavator Monday at a mine in the Steele community in eastern Pike County, near the Kentucky-Virginia line, when the machine overturned, killing him, said Chuck Wolfe, a spokesman for the Kentucky Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet.
Griffith was working at Double E Augering Mine No. 2 when the
accident happened at about 4:10 p.m., Wolfe said. Double E. Augering is based in Ashcamp.
The mine has been closed pending the outcome of an
investigation, Wolfe said.
Sixteen miners in Kentucky were killed on the job in 2006. Five
of the deaths were from a single methane gas explosion in Harlan
County in May.
