Theresa Carpenter and three-year old McKayla Carpenter survived the 30 foot jump from a Kentucky overpass and landed along I-64 in Bath County.

McKayla's mother, Amanda Carpenter, spoke out about the incident and says she still doesn't understand why it happened.

Carpenter says she is still in shock and can't believe her Theresa could do such a thing.

Carpenter says she believes she was trying to kill her daughter.

Officials say Theresa Carpenter of Owingsville was holding 3 year old McKayla Carpenter when she jumped off the overpass on Kentucky 211 onto the shoulder of Interstate 64 in Bath County Sunday morning.

The 50 year old and McKayla both survived the almost 30 foot fall. They were airlifted to UK Hospital.

As of Monday night, Theresa Carpenter was in fair condition, while McKayla was still in serious condition. McKayla is still facing several surgeries to repair a severed artery and a broken leg.

Theresa is a reading teacher at Owingsville Elementary School, where she has worked for 29 years. Those who know her say she's been a model citizen, who's always taken good care of children.

McKayla had been staying with Theresa and her husband recently, but the two do not have custody of her.

State Police say assault charges are likely against Theresa, but as of Monday night, they had not been filed.
