Senate GOP selects Stivers as new floor leader

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A state senator from eastern Kentucky has
been appointed as majority floor leader.
Robert Stivers of Manchester replaces state Sen. Dan Kelly of
Springfield who resigned from the leadership role to pursue a
judicial appointment.
Stivers, who's been in the Senate since 1997, was selected
during a meeting of Senate Republicans on Friday. Sen. Dan Seum, a
Louisville Republican, says Stivers won over Georgetown Republican
Sen. Damon Thayer.
Kelly has applied for a judicial appointment in Kentucky's 11th
Judicial Circuit. A nominating commission is scheduled to meet
Friday to pick three names for Gov. Steve Beshear's consideration.
Senate President David Williams, a Burkesville Republican, has
said previously he expects Beshear to appoint Kelly to the seat.
Kelly has not resigned his seat in the Senate.
