10 years recommended for soldier convicted in Iraqi killings

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) - A soldier convicted of negligent homicide in the deaths of three Iraqi detainees has been sentenced to ten years in prison.

The military panel also recommended last night a reduction in his rank, a dishonorable discharge and forfeiture of pay. Girouard showed no emotion during the reading of the sentence, but afterward, he hugged his attorney, Anita Gorecki.

Twenty-four-year-old Staff Sergeant Ray Girouard was found guilty Friday of three counts of negligent homicide but not guilty of premeditated murder.

Girouard was accused of telling his soldiers to release detainees they captured during the May 9 raid near Samarra, Iraq, and then shoot them as they fled.
