Sheriff Does Double Duty

Video will be available shortly

Under the law, any time a jailer's position becomes vacant the sheriff must step in.

Bourbon County Sheriff Mark Matthews says he's done that, but he wants to know how long he must play the role of sheriff and jailer. He says the role is a liability risk.

For the past three weeks Sheriff Matthews has operated the Bourbon County jail. He took the position when the jailer resigned earlier this month. Matthews says the time he is spending at the jail prevents him from patrolling the street.

County Judge Executive Donnie Foley says he's doing what the law states. Foley says he has to wait for the Department of Corrections to recommend how to fill the the position.

Matthew says someone else should take over the position on an interim basis. But Foley doesn't feel it will happen anytime soon.
