Police say a man broke into an apartment complex near UK campus earlier this week, but now police say he could be a serial rapist.
Police are stepping up their search for the man after the break-in at the Newtown Crossing Apartments early Wednesday morning.
The man police are looking for is described as an African American male, about 20 to 25 years old, 6'1 feet and about 180 pounds.
Police say the suspect crawled through a window at the apartment. When the victim woke up she says she was standing face to face with him.
The victim told us she ran out of her apartment and the man chased her, leading police to believe he was trying to assault her.
Police say the suspect may be connected to two unsolved sexual assaults near UK's campus last year. In all three cases, the suspect didn't take anything and he entered through a ground floor window.
Police told 27 NEWSFIRST they are not taking any chances. They have extra presence during second and third shifts and they are doing field interviews with people in the area.
It allows them to get to know residents and have a better idea of who is supposed to be there and who isn't. It's also a chance for people to tell police about any suspicious people or activities they notice.
The burglary and sex crimes units are also involved in the case and are working the tips that have been called in. Since they released a composite they tell us they're received dozens of tips
