Texas Men Indicted After Huge Cocaine Bust in Southern Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Two Texas men are facing federal drug charges after officers seized 112 pounds of cocaine during a traffic stop in southern Kentucky.

Francisco J. Delacruz, 35, and Humberto Contreras, 36, were stopped by a Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement officer on Interstate 65 for speeding in a work zone last week. The two, both of El Paso, Texas, were indicted on Tuesday on charges of conspiracy, aiding and abetting and possession with intent to distribute cocaine, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney David Huber's office.

The seizure was the second-largest from a traffic stop in Kentucky and the largest by state Vehicle Enforcement. An affidavit by U.S. Drug Enforcement Agent David Keiken said the wholesale value of the cocaine was more than $1 million.

After the traffic stop, Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement officers noticed a strong odor of detergent and suspected that papers presented by Delacruz had been falsified, the affidavit said. A drug-sniffing dog was later brought in and a lock on the truck's trailer was cut by authorities, the document said.

Both men face up to life in prison and $8 million in fines.
