Experts: Kentucky Universities Have Work To Do

Consultants report that Kentucky needs to invest billions of dollars in its universities.

The consultants under contract with the Council on Post-secondary Education says the commonwealth needs to spend at least 11.7 billion dollars to upgrade existing buildings and construct new ones.

The consultants found that most of the 700 buildings they toured are more than 30 years old and in poor condition compared to those in other states.

Consultant Peter Scanlon says additional space will be needed for the universities to meet their goals of enrolling 75,000 additional students by 2020.

The council also approved tuition increases ranging 7.5 percent to 9.9 percent.
