Coach accused of having sexual contact with 15-year-old volleyball player

An assistant high school coach is out of a job, and is facing a serious charge, after allegations he got too close to one of his players.

38-year-old Michael Charles used to coach girls volleyball at Phelps High School in Pike County.

But he's now charged with sodomy, after police say he had sexual contact with a 15-year-old, while the team was at a camp in Lexington.

A formal criminal complaint was filed against Charles after a 15-year-old volleyball player told her grandmother that Charles initiated inappropriate sexual acts the night of July 13.

The two, along with other members of the team, were on the University of Kentucky campus as part of a summer camp.

According to the complaint, Charles stayed in the same room as four girls on the team.

Police say there are two versions of what happened next.

The 15-year-old claims Charles engaged in inappropriate sexual contact with her.

But in a recorded interview with police, Charles claims it's the other way around.

Police say either way, it's against the law, and Charles has been charged accordingly.

Pike County Superintendent Roger Wagner says Charles was relieved of his coaching duties after the allegations surfaced.

A University of Kentucky spokesperson had no comment on the criminal case.

27 NEWSFIRST also tried to contact Michael Charles to get his side, but he did not want to comment.

Charles is currently free on a $2,000 bond.

His case has been sent on to the grand jury.
