The smell was said to be overpowering. The conditions atrocious. Now officials in Franklin County are investigating why several cats were left alone, inside a mobile home.
According to published reports, Animal Control Officer Todd Moore received complaints about a horrible smell from a trailer at Hart's Trailer Park. That's along U.S. 60 near the Franklin-Shelby county line.
When Moore went into the home, he says he found 11 cats abandoned inside, along with piles of empty pet food cans and cat feces.
A neighbor, who wouldn't go on camera, says those reports are exaggerated.
She said the woman who owned the trailer wasn't living there at the time because of health issues. But she did come by regularly to check on the cats.
The cats were all taken to the Franklin County Humane Society. They were all dehydrated, but are said to be in fair condition.
They are not adoptable at this point because they are evidence in this ongoing case.
Neither the county attorney's office or the animal control officer would comment on the case, since it's still an open investigation.
The woman in question will be in court to answer to animal cruelty charges at a later date.
