People at Whitley County High school say Daniel Dietlin was the kind of kid that was hard to miss.
“Very energetic….always had a smile on his face. A really good kid,” said former WCHS Football Coach Mike Campbell.
Campbell soon learned that after Dietlin’s high school football career ended…he had bigger dreams in place…dreams that would take him far away from his hometown of Corbin.
Dietlin joined the US Marine Corps and that took him to Afghanistan.
That’s where a freak accident happened..as Dietlin was on nighttime patrol..in a war zone.
“They don’t drive with their lights on. Very dusty…so they hit head on,” said neighor and friend Vicki Broussard.
Neighbors say Dietlin took in serious head injuries…and is now in a Maryland hospital..where his family has joined him. And back in his Corbin neighborhood, people are gracious for his service…and sacrifice.
“We thank him for that. And just worry and pray for him,” said Broussard.
