You're no longer allowed to smoke anywhere at the University of Kentucky.

A campus-wide smoking ban went into effect Thursday but not everyone's happy about it.

This afternoon UK students along with some others are speaking out against the ban at the free speech area near the Student Center.

UK's smoking ban includes all tobacco products.

U.K. officials had wanted the Urban County Council to extend the ban to sidewalks around the perimeter of campus, but Lexington leaders have put off making a decision on that issue.

The University of Louisville is also implementing a ban today.

Also, Anon from Powell Co... you don't like my opinions from the Obesity Story either do you? There are several causes to diseases, but when looking at a large group of people, all of whom have lung cancer, the common trait in 85-90% of them is smoking. (About 10% of lung cancer comes from non-smokers). Other factors include exposure to radon gas, asbestos, genetic factors, and air pollution. Of course, EVERYONE has a friend or a relative that smoked two packs a day of unfiltered cigarettes and didn't have lung cancer. It's always these that we hear about. Go ask 20 lung cancer patients if they smoked or not. I'm not a gambling man but I would put money on most of them being former (and sometimes still current) smokers. And like your post on the obesity story, the RATES are adjusted (normally per 100,000 people) so you can compare states. Kentucky ranks 1st in smoking attributable mortality at 350 per 100,000!

Donny from KY... how does alcohol kill more people than tobacco? In Kentucky, smoking-attributable mortality (the deaths attributed to smoking) is over 350 per 100,000. This is the highest in the country! So looking at the most recent numbers, there are about 4.2 million people which means about 14,700 deaths in Kentucky alone are due to smoking. How are there more than 14,000 deaths in Kentucky due to alcohol use? Looking at the World Health Organization's most recent statistics, about 5.4 million people per year die from tobacco use.
