One of the city's paddy wagons was stolen. It happened at the Hope Center around 10 p.m. An officer brought the paddy wagon there to pick up a prisoner. Police tell us the officer left the keys in the vehicle but locked it, not knowing there's a security feature that unlocks it if the keys are inside. That's when, police say, a suspect jumped in and took off. Officers quickly stopped the suspect at Sixth St. and Broadway.
He faces theft by unlawful taking and operating a vehicle with no license.

It happened at the Hope Center, that pretty much says it all! This officer just happened to be the unlucky one who got the call, and happened to be driving the new wagon. He probably did nothing differently than any of the other officers who had driven the vehicle before him, he just happened to have to go to Hope that night, and the crazies were all here, there, and everywhere.

Alls Well That Ends Well. This Officer did nothing wrong. He doesn't have to explain himself to anyone. He was doing his job. Serving and Protecting. I think people who are on this site criticizing, need to consider that our Police Officers put their lives on the lines each and every day. So many are to quick to criticize and lay blame, without even knowing the details. We have great officers in our area, and this officer is no exception. Officers have no control of morons who choose to break the law. It appears this officer was doing everything required of him. The safety feature was simply an oversight that has now been corrected and communicated with all involved. So future problems resolved. All is Well that Ends Well. Happy Thanksgiving to this Officer and all our Wonderful Police Officers who choose to continue to serve and protect us (even those who may not be worthy of that protection).

Officer are trained to respond as quickly as possible, and part of that is leaving their vehicles running in order to prevent battery drainage from the multiple computers/etc. within the vehicles. Policy is to exit vehicle, and lock. All officer carry extra key to vehicle on their person, to allow for re-entry. The new 'paddy wagon' is just that...NEW. Everyone was simply not aware of the safety feature on this particular make and model, which automatically unlocked the vehicle. This officer DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG. He responded to a call, was in the process of bringing a situation under control, when an obvious idiot decided to take a joy ride in a police vehicle. No one was harmed and the officer quickly and safely brought the vehicle back into the control of the authorities. I'm sure, because of this mishap, all officers are now fully aware of this safety feature & this'll never occur again.Give this officer a break! He was doing his job, as trained. God bless him!
