Tow Truck Driver Hit At Crash Scene

A tow truck driver called to clear a crash in Madison County ended up needing help himself.

It all started after a semi overturned on highway 52 near the Madison/Garrard County line.

Around 8:30 Thursday morning, a truck hauling sand ran off the road and hit a tree. The driver over corrected and went back across the road, flipping his truck and then crashing into a bridge.

The driver was taken to the hospital with what police say were minor injuries. But as state police were briefing the media and crews were cleaning up the scene, another accident happened.

Chester Powells owns the wrecker company that was called to the scene. He was apparently run over by one of his own trucks when the driver backed up without seeing him.

Powells was taken to Patty A. Clay Hospital where he was listed in stable condition Thursday evening.

State highway department engineers say the bridge is structurally sound and was reopened shortly after noon.

Police say charges may be pending against 56-year-old Kenneth Leach from Ohio. He was the driver of the semi.
