Kentucky Ranks Poorly In Child Safety

Kentucky is one of the leading states in the number of accidental, preventable injuries and deaths of children. That's according to a report released Monday by the group Safe Kids Worldwide.

Only five states, including West Virginia, fared worse than Kentucky.

Emergency personnel call this time of year the start of the pediatric trauma season. While it's impossible to watch all children all the time, the grim reality is more than 2100 children through age fourteen died around the country from injuries. Many of those could have been prevented.

Leaders of Safe Kids Worldwide call for stricter laws on seat belts, helmets, life jackets and other protective gear.

They say it's up to parents to set a good example.

From May to August 2004, nearly two and a half million children were rushed to emergency rooms from accidental injuries.
