Hoax Caused Panic at Lafayette High School

Video will be available shortly

A rumor about an impending shooting spread quickly through the school on Lexington's south side.

There was to be a school assembly Friday with the message of don 't drink and drive, prom is next Saturday night.

But that was quickly canceled when the rumor of potential violence at the rally surfaced.

Some students contacted their parents through cell phones and text messaging. Many of those parents quickly took their kids out of school early.

Yet officials say the school was never put in a lock-down situation.

A spokesperson for Fayette schools says incidents like this one has increased, especially since the slaughter at Virginia Tech.

The school system issued a statement late Friday afternoon saying the unfounded rumor caused unnecessary panic at the school.
