Democratic Party Chief Fumes Over E-mail

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - An election eve e-mail that purports to come from Kentucky Democratic Party Chairman Jerry Lundergan and attacks Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bruce Lunsford has the party chief fuming.

Lundergan vowed yesterday to find the person or persons responsible and he urged anyone who knows anything about the e-mail to come forward immediately. He called the e-mail "a lie and the worst kind of underhanded tactic."

The e-mail identifies the sender as "Lunsford-Fletcher for Change" and its subject line says, "A Message from Your Chairman." The text of the e-mail urges Democrats to vote for the party chairman, but does not name Lundergan.

An attached video shows the 2003 commercial for Democrat Ben Chandler's campaign attacking Lunsford, a Louisville businessman whose Vencor nursing home company went into bankruptcy in 1999. In the commercial, Jeri Stevens of Louisville says her mother was abused in a Lunsford nursing home. Lunsford called it "a deceitful personal attack."
