Man Who Made Suits for Colonel Sanders Dies

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - A Lexington tailor who fashioned suits for Colonel Harland Sanders has died at the age of 87.

Orlando Consalvi died yesterday at his home in Lexington.

His daughter-in-law, Christine Consalvi, says that after beginning his trade as a six-year-old apprentice in Italy, Consalvi worked as a tailor for 81 years. He retired in 2005 when he could no longer thread a needle.

Consalvi owned and operated Consalvi Tailor on South Limestone in Lexington for half a century, making clothes for the city's business and civic leaders. Consalvi was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. The family moved to Italy when Consalvi was a boy, and he learned tailoring in a small village there.

Consalvi and his older brother, Alberto, returned to the United States in 1937.
