People Gather To Commemorate Memorial Day
People gathered across the state on Monday to observe the Memorial Day holiday.
Memorial Day has been celebrated in some from for more than 100 years. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress, though it is still often called Decoration Day. It was then moved to the last Monday in May.
Folks throughout the state spent the holiday in their own ways. Governor Fletcher commemorated Memorial Day by participating in a ceremony at the Frankfort Cemetery.
In Jessamine County, Camp Nelson held its annual ceremony to honor fallen service members.
Dozens also showed up for a memorial service at the Lexington Cemetery.
Flags across the state flew at half-staff until noon to honor fallen service members. At noon on Memorial Day it is customary to raise the flag to full-staff until sunset, in honor of our nation's battle heroes.
