NEW YORK (AP) - A woman in an SUV ran down and killed her boyfriend as he bicycled on a city street, then she pulled the crushed bike out from under the vehicle and drove off, police and witnesses said.
Investigators found the SUV a few blocks away on Tuesday, and Jeanine Harrington, 25, later surrendered to police. A judge on Wednesday ordered her held without bail on charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon - the vehicle, the Brooklyn district attorney's office said.
Harrington did not have an attorney, though one was expected to be appointed to her Thursday.
The boyfriend, Jeffrey Moore, 47, was pronounced dead on arrival at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, police said.
Moore's sister, Jade Oliver, said her brother and Harrington had
a rocky relationship.
"What kind of heart do you have to do something like that?" asked Oliver, 57. "I told him to leave that woman alone."
Neighbors and friends propped candles outside Moore's Brooklyn home on Wednesday.
"He always had a nice, kind word to say," said Toni Favorite, who said Moore often walked her home to make sure she got there safely. "You know, he made us feel protected."
