Parents arrested while child in car

A London couple is in jail and their baby is in foster care after the parents were arrested for public intoxication, with their child in the car.

Surveillance video first shows Ashley Morgan and Xavier Cranford walking into Randolph's Bar and Grill at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. After that, police say the story gets complicated.

"Law enforcement's gotta get there and pick up all the pieces, get all the evidence and talk to all the witnesses to figure out if everyone saw the same thing," Lt. Stewart Walker said.

Police say the couple left at 6:00 p.m. to pick up their two year-old from day care. They later returned with the child. From 7:30 to 8:30, both the mother and the father went into the bar and had drinks, but the video never shows them inside together.

"I think it's horrible to be drinking with a baby, let alone going back and forth and having them in the car," Kayla Jones said.

Patrons said Ashley Morgan was intoxicated and was going to drive, so they called the police. Witnesses say Morgan struck the guardrail along the building when she tried to drive home. When officers arrived, they found Morgan in the car with her baby, along with an opened six-pack.

"There was not a choice in this matter. You cannot let two intoxicated individuals to drive off in a vehicle with a two year-old child," Walker said.

"If you're intoxicated and you are anywhere around your child, that should not be allowed," Jones said.

"Who's gonna take care of that child. They're out here drinking, they're drinking on the highway. It's not right.," Walker said.

For now, the child is in care of the state. Both Morgan and Cranford were charged with endangering the welfare of a minor and public intoxication. They will remain in prison until their individual $500 cash bonds are paid.
