Full Interview With Former Bryan Station Coach Champ Ligon
A highly successful Lexington high school boys basketball coach is fired last night despite having a winning season.
In fact, in the past three years, his defenders won more games than any other public high school in Lexington.
Today Bryan Station's former coach Champ Ligon talked to 27 NEWSFIRST about being blind sided by the firing.
Champ Ligon says he can't lie, it hurts being fired, especially from the program he thought he would finish his career at.
Ligon took over a Bryan Station team that had won just two games. Three years later, Ligon launched the defenders into a state powerhouse, winning 20 games each season and being ranked 2nd in the state much of this season.
Parents and players feel the firing is a race issue, Ligon admits hearing that, but hopes it's not true.
Star player Shelvin Mack says the team is compiling a petition to try to get his job back.
Principal Gladys Peeples did not want to comment on her decision.
