Knoxville jury deliberates in slaying trial

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A Knoxville jury has begun deliberations
in the trial of a man accused in the carjacking and torture murders
of a young couple.
The defense for George Thomas of Lebanon, Ky., rested Monday
morning as the trial resumed in Knoxville. No witnesses were called
by the defense on Saturday and no evidence was presented Monday.
Criminal Court Judge Richard Baumgarter proceeded with 67 pages
of instructions to jurors, who began deliberating Monday afternoon.
Twenty-one-year-old Channon Christian and her 23-year-old
boyfriend Christopher Newsom were carjacked, tortured and killed in
January 2007.
In previous trials in the case, two others have been convicted
and one of them sentenced to death.
