New recycling containers in downtown Lexington

A new initiative by the city aims to help reduce the amount of garbage the city sends to the landfill while reducing costs.

The Urban County Government will begin installing 120 recycling containers throughout the downtown area.

The bins will have two separate compartments, one for non recyclable material and one for plastic, glass, paper and aluminum that can be recycled.

The mayor says that the new program could actually make the city money.

A study performed by the city found that as much as two thirds of the garbage hauled to the landfill was recyclable.
