Former prison guard sentenced for smuggling drugs

LONDON, Ky. (AP) - A former guard is headed to prison for
six-and-a-half years for smuggling drugs into the eastern Kentucky
facility where she worked.

31-year-old Alice Stapleton was convicted on charges she brought
in heroin, marijuana and contraband cell phones for inmates. She
worked at the maximum-security Penitentiary at Big Sandy.

The federal judge that sentenced her yesterday says she violated
a position of trust and endangered staff members.

Federal prosecutors say Stapleton had an agreement with an
inmate and received 1,000 dollars for each time she smuggled drugs
into the maximum security prison.

Her attorney says he will appeal the conviction.
