ROME (AP) - The Vatican Web site reports 60-year-old Joseph
Kurtz has been named archbishop of Louisville by Pope Benedict the
16th.
Kurtz has served as the bishop of the Roman Catholic diocese of
Knoxville. He replaces Archbishop Thomas C. Kelly, who submitted
his resignation when he turned 75 in July but remained on the job
until his successor was appointed.
Kurtz is a Pennsylvania native. He was appointed head of the
50-thousand-member Knoxville diocese in 1999. The Louisville
archdiocese has 200-thousand Catholics. Kurtz will also coordinate
the work of the church in Kentucky, made up of the larger,
Louisville archdiocese and three smaller dioceses in Owensboro,
Covington and Lexington.
