Police Chief Randy Lacy is not the first Powell County police officer killed in the line of duty.

We have been researching how many officers have died there and across the state. There have been 424 Kentucky Police officers killed in the line of duty in Kentucky.

Officials tell us most of them, 298, died as a result of gunfire. Before Wednesday only 1 officer had died in the line of duty so far this year.

The last time a Lexington police officer was killed in the line of duty was 1985 when Roy Mardis was shot to death. As for Fayette County Sheriff's Department, Deputy Sheriff Joseph Angelucci was killed in 1988.

The last time the Clay City Police Department lost an officer was 1913.
But you may recall more recently in 1992 the Powell County Sheriff and a deputy were killed on the job.

Sheriff Steve Bennett and Deputy Arthur Briscoe, who were brother's in law, were shot and killed by Ralph Baze as they tried to serve a warrant on him.

Baze ambushed the two and killed them both with an AK-47 rifle.
Sheriff Bennett was 40 years old and Deputy Briscoe was 39.
Ralph Baze was sentenced to death for the murders. He's still awaiting execution.

The names of fallen law enforcement officers are listed on a memorial monument located in front of the John W. Bizzack Law Enforcement Training Complex in Richmond.
